National Dog Day

This was a new find for me this year. I wasn't aware we had a National Dog Day. As a pet owner, I was thrilled to learn of this day. Molly is our sweet girl and she brings joy to our lives. With her in our life, it seems that National Dog Day is everyday. Did we spoil her today, well, not anymore than any other day of the year.

In my search for National Dog Day, I came across a website dedicated to advocating for dogs. It is appropriately called National Dog Day. While visiting, I discovered that National Dog Day was founded by author and animal behaviorist, Colleen Paige in 2004. She invented this observational holiday to not only show appreciation for dogs, but to bring attention to the plight of abused dogs, to end puppy mills and to bring an end to breed-specific legislation that regulates, or outright bans, certain breeds in the hope of minimizing dog attacks. The significance of August 26? Colleen Paige's family adopted their first dog "Sheltie". Colleen was 10 years old at the time.

What can you do to celebrate dogs? There are several things. Here is a quick list of 10.

1. Take your dog for a walk.

2. Play fetch with your dog.

3. Play tug-of-war with your dog. (Molly loves this one!)

4. Run with your dog (Molly loves this one too!).

5. Explore somewhere new outside.

6. Appreciate your dog.

7. Snuggle with your dog.

8. Visit a shelter.

9. Foster a dog.

10. Donate to your favorite local animal shelter or charity.

How will you celebrate National Dog Day? Molly went for two walks and got a bath! Need a new leash, check out our store. We have different sizes and they are customizable.
